That distribution choice, physical signage rather than app-only access, is a deliberate bet on capturing shoppers who arrive without a plan rather than only serving customers who researched online first.
The company operates 2,364 retail stores plus more than 1,340 SRS locations across North America, and Magic Apron now runs across the full retail footprint rather than a test market subset. That is a meaningfully larger and faster rollout than most retailers attempt with a new AI capability, and it signals that Home Depot's internal testing gave leadership enough confidence to skip an extended regional pilot phase before going national.
What the Tool Actually Answers
Magic Apron handles the kind of project-specific questions that used to require finding a knowledgeable associate: whether a particular fertilizer is compatible with a customer's grass seed, what supplies a drywall repair project needs beyond the obvious purchase, or where a specific SKU sits on the shelf right now. The tool accepts text, voice-to-text, and photo input, and works across multiple languages, which extends its reach to customers an English-only in-store kiosk would have missed entirely.
The in-store mapping feature, showing real-time product location and availability across the store a customer is standing in, is the detail most directly tied to measurable behavior change. Pilot testing reportedly found customers valued faster product location and greater confidence in whether a product actually fit their project, two friction points that directly affect whether a shopping trip converts to a completed project purchase rather than an abandoned cart in the parking lot.
The Associate Question Nobody Is Answering Yet

Multimodal Input Is the Real Technical Leap

That combination requires the assistant to stay integrated with live store-level inventory systems rather than a generic, centrally managed product catalog, a considerably harder systems integration problem than a website chatbot that can answer questions from static product descriptions written once and reused across every store in the chain regardless of local stock levels.
Retailers evaluating a similar build should treat the store-level inventory integration as the actual engineering lift worth budgeting for carefully, well ahead of the conversational AI layer sitting on top of it that tends to get most of the executive attention in planning meetings. Home Depot's ability to launch nationally, rather than staging the rollout across a handful of pilot stores first, suggests that integration work was substantially complete before the public announcement went out, which represents a meaningfully larger and longer-lead investment than the customer-facing chat interface implies on its own to anyone evaluating the effort from the outside.
