Tapestry, the parent company of Coach and Kate Spade, has made both brands' products directly purchasable inside Google Search, Google's AI Mode, and the Gemini app. A shopper researching a handbag can now complete the purchase using Google Pay in a few taps, without a redirect to a brand's own site. That removes one of the largest sources of drop-off in online retail, the handoff between a search result and an unfamiliar checkout page, by collapsing discovery and purchase into a single surface the customer already trusts and already has payment credentials saved on.

Tapestry CEO Joanne Crevoiserat framed the move as following how shoppers already behave: "Consumer behaviours are always evolving... Now it's happening inside a conversation with AI." That framing positions the integration as responding to demand that already exists rather than trying to manufacture new behavior, and it fits a pattern this quarter of major brands treating AI shopping surfaces as places customers already are, worth committing real merchandising resources to now rather than testing cautiously on the sidelines.

Three Google Surfaces, One Integration

The rollout is not limited to a single Google product. Coach and Kate Spade products are purchasable inside traditional Google Search results, inside Google's conversational AI Mode, and inside the standalone Gemini app, three interfaces with genuinely different user intent and interaction patterns. A shopper typing a quick query in Search behaves differently than one having an extended conversation in AI Mode or asking Gemini for a gift recommendation, yet Tapestry's single integration serves all three without separate engineering work for each surface.

That detail is worth more attention than it gets, because it demonstrates protocol reusability value even within one company's ecosystem, before any cross-platform benefit is counted. If a single vendor already requires supporting three distinct shopping surfaces from one integration, brands should expect that multiplication to repeat across every major AI company's own growing family of interfaces. That reinforces the case for building once against a shared protocol rather than committing engineering resources to bespoke, surface-by-surface integrations that will only multiply as each platform adds more ways to shop.

An Open Protocol, Not a Google-Only Bet

The more consequential detail is technical rather than commercial. Tapestry built the integration on the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open industry standard for agentic commerce, rather than a proprietary connection built specifically for Google. Tapestry's chief information and digital officer, Yang Lu, was explicit about the reasoning: "We built this layer to work with our existing operations... protocol agnostic, so we can quickly move into new AI environments." That is a deliberate hedge in a market where OpenAI, Google, Perplexity, and payment networks are all pushing competing checkout standards for AI agents.

For a retail tech leader watching the agentic commerce landscape fragment across multiple incompatible protocols, this choice is the more useful signal than the Google partnership itself. Building once against an open standard and then plugging into whichever AI platforms adopt it carries a materially different integration cost than building bespoke connections to each AI vendor separately. Tapestry is effectively betting that protocol interoperability, more than exclusive partnership with any single AI company, will matter most once agentic checkout moves from pilot to mainstream volume.

Live Now, Expanding Deliberately

The UCP-powered checkout is live in the US today, with Tapestry stating plans to expand internationally. That sequencing, US first with a clear international roadmap, suggests this has moved past an experimental pilot and into a genuine go-to-market channel the company intends to scale. For a company the size of Tapestry, committing brand-level checkout infrastructure to a still-emerging protocol is a meaningful statement of confidence in where agentic commerce standards are heading, backed by production transaction volume rather than a press-cycle marketing partnership.

It also puts pressure on competing luxury and fashion houses to make a similar decision faster than they might have planned. Once one major apparel and accessories company demonstrates that in-search checkout works at scale, the case for peers to wait and see gets weaker. Fashion retail has historically been cautious about ceding control of the purchase experience to a third-party interface, given how much brand storytelling happens at checkout, so this move is worth watching as a test of how far that caution has already eroded across the category.

Implication for the Roadmap

For ecommerce and digital leaders, the practical takeaway is to evaluate open agentic commerce protocols like UCP now, even where a full integration is not imminent. The cost of building against an open standard rather than a single platform's proprietary API is lower over a multi-year horizon, and it avoids re-engineering checkout every time a new AI shopping surface gains meaningful traffic. Teams should map which protocols their current commerce platform and payment processor already support before treating this as a from-scratch build requiring new vendor relationships.

The governance question deserves equal attention. Handing checkout control to a third-party interface means losing some visibility into the customer relationship at the exact moment of purchase, the point where brands traditionally capture email addresses, offer loyalty enrollment, and control the final impression. Retail leaders pursuing this path should negotiate explicitly for what customer data and post-purchase touchpoints they retain, treating the integration as a channel to manage carefully rather than discovering the data gap only after volume has scaled.
