On July 20, Austin-based Loman AI announced it had joined the Toast Partner Ecosystem, making its AI phone agent an officially integrated option for the restaurants that run on Toast's point-of-sale platform. The agent answers inbound calls around the clock, takes orders and reservations, handles menu questions, and pushes the resulting ticket directly into Toast so it flows to the kitchen display and the register the same way an in-person or online order does. The integration is generally available now, and Loman says restaurants can go live in under a day, a deployment speed that matters to operators who cannot spare weeks for a technology rollout during service.

Christian Wiens, chief executive and co-founder of Loman AI, framed the value around the systems restaurants already trust. Operators built their entire operation around Toast, he said, and the integration helps close the gap between the phone and an optimal tech stack. That gap is real. The phone has stayed stubbornly analog while ordering moved to apps and kiosks, so a ringing line during a dinner rush often goes unanswered, and every unanswered call at a busy independent restaurant is an order that walks to a competitor. Loman's pitch is to make the phone as automated and measurable as the digital channels already are.

Why the phone is the overlooked channel

Food service spent the last decade digitizing everything except the phone. Online ordering, delivery marketplaces, and kiosks all captured investment because they were visible and easy to measure, while the phone line kept ringing into a busy kitchen where staff either dropped what they were doing to answer or let it go to voicemail. For takeout-heavy formats, that unanswered ring is a direct revenue leak that never shows up in a dashboard, because a caller who gets no answer simply hangs up and orders elsewhere, leaving no trace of the sale the restaurant lost.

Loman's traction reflects where that leak hurts most. The company reports strongest adoption in pizza, wings, and other takeout-driven concepts, the exact categories where a large share of orders still arrive by phone and where a missed call maps cleanly to a lost ticket. Those operators run on thin margins and tight labor, so an agent that answers every call without adding headcount targets a problem they feel nightly. The broader point for retail and commerce leaders is that voice remains a live, high-intent channel in whole categories, and it has been underserved by automation precisely because it was harder to instrument than a web checkout.

How the integration actually works

The technical claim that makes this credible is native ticketing. Loman's agent does not just transcribe a call and email a summary. It accesses the restaurant's Toast menu, prices the order, and places it directly into the point-of-sale so it appears alongside every other order in the kitchen and on the register. That closes the loop that trips up lesser voice tools, where an AI takes an order but a human still has to key it into the system, reintroducing the error and delay the automation was supposed to remove. Landing the ticket in the operator's existing workflow is the difference between a demo and a deployment.

Loman positions itself as purpose-built for restaurants rather than a general voice assistant retrofitted for the use case, and beyond Toast it lists integrations with Square, Clover, SpotOn, OpenTable, Aloha, Olo, and Stream. That breadth matters because the point-of-sale market in food service is fragmented, and an agent that only works with one system serves a fraction of operators. By meeting restaurants on the platforms they already run, Loman lowers the switching cost to near zero, since adopting the agent changes how calls are answered without disturbing the register, the menu, or the kitchen process the staff already knows.

The economics operators will scrutinize

The figures Loman puts forward are the kind that get an owner's attention. The company reports that operators using its platform see up to 22 percent higher phone revenue and up to 17 percent lower labor costs, gains it attributes to capturing calls that previously went unanswered and to removing the staffing burden of manning the phone during peak service. Both mechanisms are plausible on their face. A phone that is always answered converts more of the demand already dialing in, and a phone that answers itself frees a worker to expedite orders or serve the counter instead of being tethered to a handset.

Those are vendor-supplied numbers, framed as up-to ceilings rather than typical results, and any operator should treat them as a hypothesis to test rather than a promise to bank. The right diligence is a short pilot in one or two locations that measures answered-call rate, average phone ticket, and labor hours before and after, against a clean baseline. If even a fraction of the claimed lift holds and the agent handles menu edge cases and upsells without frustrating callers, the payback math is favorable for a takeout-heavy restaurant, because the cost of the service is small next to the revenue of the calls it recovers.

The signal for agentic AI in commerce

This launch is a useful data point on where agentic AI actually earns its keep in commerce. The splashy agentic commerce headlines involve shopping agents negotiating purchases across the open web, but the deployments generating real revenue today are narrow, embedded, and tied to a system of record. Loman does one job, answering and converting phone orders, and it wins by dropping the result into the tool the operator already runs. That pattern, a focused voice agent wired into an incumbent platform, is a more reliable route to production than a general assistant that promises to do everything and integrates with nothing.

For retail and hospitality leaders, the takeaway is to look for the channel where automation maps directly to money and where the agent can act inside existing systems rather than beside them. Voice in takeout food service fits both tests, which is why Loman crossed 1,500 restaurants before most agentic commerce pilots left the lab. The Toast partnership matters less as a single vendor milestone than as evidence that the near-term winners in agentic commerce will be the ones that pick one high-intent interaction, do it well, and settle the result into the platform the business already trusts.
