The Machine Learning Engineer Associate exam, MLA-C02, opened beta registration in English this month, with general availability set for January 14, 2027, priced at $75 for the 170-minute, 85-question beta version.
The exam's new content areas cover generative AI solutions, working with foundation models and large language models, and orchestrating agentic AI workflows end to end. That last phrase carries the most weight for hiring teams to notice. AWS is testing whether a candidate can design and manage multi-step agentic systems that coordinate tools and decisions across a workflow, well beyond whether they can simply call an LLM API correctly. That distinction maps directly onto the skill gap most enterprises report when they try to move AI pilots into production and discover their engineering teams have never actually built a working agentic system before.
The architect and developer exams moved just as far
The Solutions Architect Professional exam, SAP-C03, opens for registration October 27, 2026, with general availability landing November 17, 2026, priced at $300 for a 180-minute, 75-question exam. Its new content adds generative AI and agentic architecture patterns alongside two other forward-looking domains: post-quantum cryptography and resilience-as-a-service design. Pairing agentic AI architecture with post-quantum cryptography inside the same exam update signals that AWS views both as near-term production concerns enterprise architects need to handle now, rather than distant, theoretical topics worth only passing familiarity with.
The Developer Associate exam, DVA-C03, opens for registration the same day, with general availability arriving December 1, 2026 at $150 for 130 minutes and 65 questions. It shifts its developer-tooling content toward AI-assisted development directly: using AI tools to generate, review, and optimize code, and integrating managed AI services into applications as a standard part of the build process. This amounts to AWS formally acknowledging that AI-assisted coding has become a baseline developer skill it expects certified engineers to demonstrate on the exam, rather than treating it as an optional productivity add-on worth mentioning only in passing.
The timing compresses your hiring pipeline's shelf life
All three updates roll out within roughly a five-week window this fall, from the MLA-C02 beta opening now through the SAP-C03 and DVA-C03 exams going live between October and December. For any enterprise using AWS certifications as a hiring or promotion filter, that compressed rollout window means job requisitions and internal skills matrices written even six months ago are now effectively testing candidates against outdated exam versions that never covered agentic workflow orchestration or AI-assisted development content at all, because that material simply did not exist in the version those candidates originally sat for.
This creates a subtle but genuinely consequential problem for technical recruiting teams. A candidate holding a Solutions Architect Professional certification earned under the prior exam version has demonstrated real, verified cloud architecture skill, yet has never been evaluated on generative AI or agentic system design specifically, since that content simply was not part of the exam they took at the time. Treating an older-vintage certification as fully equivalent to the new one overstates what has actually been validated, and it is an easy gap for a technical interview to miss entirely if the interviewer assumes the badge means the same thing it did a year earlier.
What to change in your hiring criteria now
CTOs and engineering leaders who reference AWS certifications in job postings or internal leveling frameworks should update those references now to cite the specific new exam codes, MLA-C02, SAP-C03, and DVA-C03, rather than the certification name alone, since the name persists unchanged across versions while the tested content shifts substantially underneath it. This matters most for roles you are filling specifically for agentic AI or production LLM work, where a stale certification reference could pass a candidate through initial screening who has genuinely never been tested on the exact skill your team needs them to have on day one.
It is also worth treating this AWS update as a useful external benchmark for your own internal AI competency framework, whether or not your infrastructure runs on AWS at all. If the industry's largest cloud certification body has concluded that agentic workflow orchestration and AI-assisted development belong in baseline associate and professional-level exams rather than specialized add-ons reserved for advanced tracks, that is a reasonable signal for where your own internal skills assessments and training curricula should be heading over the next two quarters of planning.
Certification churn as an ongoing procurement cost
There is a cost dimension here that often gets overlooked in the excitement over new exam content. Every certification refresh cycle forces organizations to decide whether to fund recertification for existing staff, absorb the ambiguity of a workforce holding a mix of exam vintages, or treat the update as a one-time recruiting filter applied only to new hires going forward. AWS updating three certifications within a five-week window compresses that decision timeline considerably, and finance teams that budget training spend annually rather than quarterly will likely find themselves reacting to this cycle rather than planning for it in advance.
The organizations handling this well are treating certification currency as a tracked operational metric, similar to how they already track software license currency or security patch compliance across their environment. That means maintaining a live inventory of which employees hold which exam version, budgeting proactively for recertification on a rolling basis rather than in response to an announcement, and building the assumption of periodic content refreshes directly into workforce planning rather than treating each update as a surprise that disrupts an otherwise stable hiring and promotion process.
